Simple Ways to Support Your Rising 5th Grader’s Math Skills This Summer
(No Stress Required!)

Picture
Looking for a way to keep your rising 5th grader sharp in math over the summer—without constant battles or boring worksheets? You’re not alone.

Whether 4th grade was a challenge, a success, or somewhere in between, summer break can make a big difference. It’s a time when math skills can either stay strong—or start to slip. This is especially important in Florida, where students are expected to master the B.E.S.T. Standards for Math, which are assessed through the statewide FAST Math assessment.
The good news? With just 15–30 minutes a day of focused, fun, and standards-aligned practice, your child can stay on track, build real confidence, and enter 5th grade ready for success on the FAST Math test--and still have time to enjoy their summer.

Why Summer Math Practice Matters

The summer slide is a real challenge—many students lose key math skills during the break, especially without regular practice. But helping your rising 5th grader stay on track doesn’t have to involve stressful lessons or piles of worksheets.
What really works is steady, low-stress math practice that’s easy to manage and fits into everyday life. A little bit of the right kind of review goes a long way—especially with the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards and the upcoming FAST Math assessment in mind.

If you’ve already tried:
  • Working through problems together (but it ends in frustration),
  • Paying for tutoring (but it didn’t click—or got too expensive),
  • Browsing online (but got lost in endless options),
You’re not alone—and you’re in the right place.

What Math Skills Should a Rising 5th Grader Work On?

Below are the
key math skills 5th graders in Florida will focus on. By exposing your child to these skills over the summer, they will feel more confident at the beginning of the school year. Do not stress about them mastering every single skill. Just create a consistent, flexible schedule to help them prevent the summer slide.
